Haas Adobe Watercolors & Wallpaper Discoveries

The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation is currently displaying two exhibits at the Casa de la Guerra Historic House Museum. The first gallery features a series of watercolor paintings of Santa Barbara adobes by German-born artist Fridolin Haas (1887-1959). Commissioned by the late civic leader Pearl Chase, they were painted between 1951 and 1953. These paintings document the Hispanic architectural heritage of Santa Barbara and capture the beauty and uniqueness of each structure. Some of the adobes featured in the collection no longer stand; others are familiar landmarks within the city.

On display in the second gallery are framed 19th century wallpaper fragments excavated from the walls of Casa de la Guerra during its restoration in the early 1990s. These beautiful samples provide information about the various changes in the Casa’s interior decoration and offer insight into popular fashions while the de la Guerra family occupied the home.
